Vancouver Details World Cup Plan: Road Closures, Drones and New Stadium Rules

The rollout signals tighter access and stricter screening to move large crowds safely through downtown.

Overview

  • City, police and transit officials, who briefed media Wednesday, outlined match logistics and a FIFA retrofit now underway at BC Place ahead of seven games starting June 13.
  • A section of Pacific Boulevard will shut from May 23 to late July between the Cambie Street Bridge and Carrall Street, with larger traffic blocks enforced on each match day.
  • TransLink will add service, close two SkyTrain stations on match days, and direct most pickups and drop-offs to Main Street–Science World as the arrival hub.
  • Vancouver Police will add more CCTV around the stadium and may deploy drones to track crowd movement when needed.
  • BC Place will follow FIFA entry rules that replace bag checks with $20-per-item off-site storage and allow only empty, clear, soft-sided water bottles up to one litre.
