Van Driver Arrested After Highways Worker Killed in M23 Crash Near Gatwick

A forensic collision inquiry by Sussex Police has closed the M23 southbound and is expected to keep the route shut into the afternoon.

  • A single-vehicle crash on the M23 southbound at Junction 9 near Gatwick in the early hours of Wednesday resulted in the death of a 65-year-old highways worker.
  • Sussex Police arrested a 38-year-old man from Croydon on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and drink-driving and he remains in custody as detectives investigate.
  • The southbound carriageway is closed between Junctions 8 and 10 while officers carry out forensic examination and vehicle recovery.
  • National Highways has put official diversions in place using the hollow-diamond signs via the A22 and A264 and Gatwick Airport has warned drivers to allow extra travel time.
