Valve Updates Steam Regional Pricing With New Conversion Options

Developers now choose from three methods to set local prices that could change what players pay by country.

Overview

  • Valve refreshed Steam’s pricing conversion data and added two new methods, giving developers three options across 35 currencies and four region groups.
  • The options include a straight exchange-rate conversion, a model based on local purchasing power, and a composite method that blends purchasing power, comparable entertainment prices, and exchange rates.
  • Prices will not change on their own because publishers must submit and publish new prices, and Valve says store visibility does not depend on which method a developer picks.
  • Shifts are likely to be most felt in markets where incomes and currency strength differ from the U.S. or Europe, such as Brazil, India, and China, which could make some games cheaper and others more expensive.
  • Some coverage described “three methods,” while Valve’s note specifies two new methods added to the previous tool, creating three total options for conversion.
