Valve Releases Steam Machine CAD Files for Hobbyist Customization

The posted 3D designs let owners make and share custom Steam Machine shells under a non-commercial Creative Commons license that bars commercial sales.

Overview

  • Valve has published official 3D CAD files for the Steam Machine exterior so owners can design and 3D-print front plates, replacement panels, stands and other non-commercial accessories.
  • The files are distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 license, which permits sharing and adaptation but prohibits selling products made from those designs.
  • Valve’s readme warns that opening the Steam Machine enclosure voids the device warranty and advises using professional help to avoid damage that would not be covered.
  • The company also enabled AMD FSR 4.1 for Steam Machine users through Proton Experimental and said it is fulfilling reservation orders daily while expecting current reservists to receive purchase opportunities before year-end.
  • The release continues Valve’s recent pattern of sharing hardware designs, a move that will make it easier for hobbyists to customize devices while keeping commercial control and limiting unlicensed accessory sales.
