Valentine’s Cyclone Slams Calabria and Sicily, Triggers Floods and Coastal Damage

Civil protection warnings stay in place with a sharp weekend temperature fall expected to return snow.

Overview

  • National civil protection issued orange alerts for Calabria and Sicily and yellow alerts for several other regions as a deep Atlantic system targets Tyrrhenian areas.
  • In the Cosenza area, the Busento and Campagnano rivers overflowed, isolating families and flooding roads after more than 260 millimetres of rain in 48 hours, with fire crews and civil protection leading rescues.
  • Sea conditions are critical with forecasts of 4–7 metre waves on exposed coasts and up to about 9 metres offshore; gusts topped 100 km/h in Messina, the Eolian islands were cut off, and waves threatened the railway at Paola.
  • A landslide near Rome killed a 58-year-old man in Formello, while landslides, road closures, school shutdowns, and flight disruptions were reported in parts of Campania, Calabria, and Sicily, including diversions and cancellations at Reggio Calabria airport.
  • Forecasters expect continued hazardous surf and a marked temperature drop over the weekend, with snow forecast to return to lower elevations in the Alps and stretches of the Apennines.
