Valencian Teachers Stage Mass Strike as Unions Threaten Open-Ended Walkout

A months-long standoff over pay, staffing, language policy now hinges on April 16 talks.

Overview

  • Public school teachers across the Valencian Community held a region-wide strike Tuesday, with marches that drew about 16,000 people in València and roughly 10,000 in Alicante, according to the central government's local delegation.
  • The education department's provisional count reported 25,322 of 71,150 teachers on strike, or 35.59%, while unions put participation near 80%.
  • STEPV, CSIF, CCOO and UGT demand pay recovery after years without regional raises, smaller classes, less paperwork, more staffing and better facilities, as well as stronger guarantees for teaching in Valencian.
  • Consellera Carmen Ortí said the government wants dialogue, cited teaching staff at what she called historic levels, and estimated cutting class sizes would cost about €800 million a year.
  • Union leaders warned they will call an indefinite strike if the April 16 sector talks produce no concrete offers, and some are weighing models that could begin in May and concentrate pressure during final exams and grading.
