Valencian Language Academy Rejects Bilingual “Valencia/Valéncia” Name, Upholds “València

The ruling now moves to the regional administration for review, triggering an objections window before any change to the city’s official toponymy.

Overview

  • The AVL plenary approved an extensive report by a broad majority rejecting the PP–Vox city hall plan to add a Spanish form with a closed accent, keeping the official form as “València”.
  • The report will be sent to the Generalitat’s Directorate-General for Local Administration, after which it will be released with full reasoning and a period for formal allegations will open.
  • The municipal government cites a technical study by linguist and AVL academic Abelard Saragossà and argues the closed-accent spelling is historically attested and mirrors majority pronunciation.
  • City spokesman Juan Carlos Caballero criticized the Academy’s stance and transparency, noted the city will evaluate next steps upon receiving the report, and pointed to precedents such as l’Énova.
  • The AVL’s position echoes its 2016 conclusion that the proper historical and linguistic spelling is “València”, while the IIFV backs retaining that form, as broader political tensions over language persist, including recent criticism of the AVL by provincial leader Vicent Mompó.
