Valencian Floods Probe Judge Rejects Bid to Call Rufián, Bars Rope as Evidence

The judge deemed the requests irrelevant, stressing protection of the deceased girl's family from further harm.

Overview

  • On December 19, magistrate Nuria Ruiz Tobarra of the Catarroja court denied a bid to subpoena ERC spokesman Gabriel Rufián over a rope fragment he displayed in a congressional hearing.
  • The order also refused to add the full transcript of ex–regional minister Salomé Pradas’s appearance before the Congress inquiry to the judicial case file.
  • The court rejected incorporating the rope into the case or conducting DNA, physical, or hydrological tests on it, finding the measures unnecessary to clarify the death.
  • Ruiz Tobarra said the parents of the 11-year-old should not be called again because their testimony is already on record and further questioning would be harmful.
  • The particular accusation representing relatives, expelled in September and recently reinstated by the Provincial Court of Valencia, remains in the case as the investigation into emergency management and implicated officials, including Pradas and Emilio Argüeso, continues.
