Valencia Observes San Vicente Ferrer Holiday With Mascletà in Plaza Tetuán and 7 p.m. Procession

The local holiday disrupts normal shopping hours across the city.

Overview

  • Valencia, which marks the patron’s day on Monday as a local non‑working holiday, extends the observance to many nearby municipalities in the Valencian Community.
  • Mercadona confirmed it will close stores where the holiday applies, and major chains such as Consum, Carrefour, Lidl and El Corte Inglés also keep locations shut, while some smaller formats like Charter, Carrefour Express and Dia post special hours online.
  • City shopping malls including Nuevo Centro, Aqua, Arena and El Saler close retail shops, though leisure and dining areas such as cinemas and bowling alleys remain open.
  • Following Sunday night’s 9:30 p.m. fireworks by the Puente de Serranos, a 2 p.m. mascletà — a loud daytime fireworks display — is scheduled Monday in Plaza Tetuán instead of the usual Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
  • The program concludes Monday with a 7 p.m. procession leaving the Cathedral, a ritual sustained by long‑standing cofradías and civic chapters and spotlighting this year’s Honorable Clavariesa, Vicenta Evangelina Escudero.
