Valencia Marks San Vicente Mártir Holiday With Closures and Processions as Mascletà Is Canceled

National mourning over the Adamuz train crash removed the mascletà, concentrating the observance on religious rites with traffic controls in the historic center.

Overview

  • The local holiday, set by the DOGV for January 22, shut schools, many public offices and numerous retailers across Valencia city.
  • Mercadona and Consum closed city stores along with Carrefour, Lidl and Día, while Aldi, Carrefour Express and Charter de Consum operated as exceptions.
  • City shopping centres such as El Saler, Aqua, Nuevo Centro and Arena, plus El Corte Inglés, kept retail closed, as leisure and dining areas opened.
  • Large sites outside city limits, including Bonaire, MN4, Ikea, Gran Turia and El Osito, traded on normal hours because the day is not a holiday in those municipalities.
  • Processions proceeded in Ciutat Vella from 11:30 to 13:30 with defined routes and parking bans, and religious services continued despite the mascletà suspension.
