Valencia Installs Floral Tapestry as Cathedral Reroutes Traslado for Safety

Church officials say the detour keeps devotees clear of façade works to reduce crush risk.

Overview

  • The city is installing an 80 square meter floral tapestry in Plaza de la Virgen that honors the Virgen de los Desamparados and marks 325 years since Antonio Palomino finished the basilica vault paintings.
  • The piece, designed by Decourba, uses more than 320 kilograms of fresh flowers and forms three visual planes including a 3.5 meter image of the patron.
  • The Cabildo of Valencia Cathedral has changed the Traslado route to avoid calle del Micalet because construction lines the side of the temple.
  • The new path runs through the Emilio Aparicio Olmo passage, Plaza de la Almoina and Calle Barchilla before entering by the Puerta de los Hierros.
  • Cathedral leaders said the work zone cannot safely absorb a sudden surge of people and asked participants to follow instructions to keep the crowded procession orderly.
