UVigo Runoff Will Deliver First Woman Rector as García Mateo Leads Rubio

The outcome may turn on a thin student vote alongside rules that give permanent faculty the largest weight.

Overview

  • Following Wednesday's first-round vote, Universidade de Vigo set a May 15 runoff between Carmen García Mateo and Belén Rubio after neither reached the 50% needed to win.
  • García Mateo led with about 40.2% of the weighted vote to Rubio's 33.9%, with Jacobo Porteiro at 25.8%.
  • Overall participation was about 20.8%, with only 2,351 of 18,253 students voting, which some students blamed on exam timing and the lack of online voting.
  • UVigo uses a weighted system that gives permanent faculty 51% of the result, students 25%, technical and administrative staff 15%, and other teaching staff 9%, so uneven turnout by sector can swing the outcome.
  • Porteiro declined to endorse either finalist, leaving his voters up for grabs as both campaigns court his supporters to boost turnout.
