Uttarakhand Gorge Crash Kills 8, Injures 2 in Tehri Garhwal

Police are probing whether driver fatigue or speed caused the pickup to leave the steep Chamba–Koti road.

Overview

  • An SUV-style pickup carrying villagers plunged about 300 metres near Nail on the Chamba–Koti road on Thursday, leaving eight dead and two injured.
  • All occupants were from Thyoldhar in Ghansali and were returning home after performing last rites in Haridwar for 65-year-old Sampat Lal.
  • SDRF, police and fire crews recovered the bodies and moved two survivors to District Hospital Baurari, where doctors reported both to be stable as senior district officials oversaw the operation.
  • Officials said the driver lost control, and investigators are examining possible dozing at the wheel, speed or a mechanical fault while post-mortems proceed.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Rs 2 lakh ex gratia for each bereaved family as Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami directed prompt care for the injured.
