Uttarakhand Constitutes Minority Education Authority to Replace Madrasa Board in July 2026

The new body will set curricula with recognition routed through the state board.

Overview

  • The government formally notified a 12-member State Minority Education Authority chaired by Dr Surjit Singh Gandhi, with all members drawn from minority communities.
  • The Authority will determine syllabi for minority institutions and require recognition through the Uttarakhand Board of School Education, according to officials and the chief minister.
  • The law expands protected status to institutions run by Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Christian and Parsi communities, moving beyond the earlier focus on madrasas.
  • The Directors General of School Education, SCERT and Minority Welfare join as ex officio members to align minority schooling with state standards.
  • The Madrasa Board remains operational until its abolition scheduled for July 2026, with previously recognised institutions to undergo re-recognition for the 2025–26 academic session under the new regime.
