Uttar Pradesh Leads India in March With Record Rooftop Solar Installations

Heavy subsidies and close monitoring drove the surge.

Overview

  • The state logged 52,729 home rooftop systems in March 2026, the highest monthly total by any state under the PM Surya Ghar scheme.
  • Total installations stand at 448,233 with 1,524.61 MW on rooftops, and officials reported a one-day peak of 3,188 systems on March 31.
  • Authorities said subsidies of about ₹4,000 crore have been paid, with roughly ₹2,985 crore from the Centre, cutting upfront costs for lakhs of households.
  • The installed capacity now produces an estimated 6.8 to 7.0 million units of electricity each day and has supported more than 60,000 jobs in the state.
  • Uptake clusters in cities such as Lucknow, Varanasi, Kanpur Nagar, Bareilly, Agra and Prayagraj, yet only about a third of 12.66 lakh applications have converted because vendors, banks and discom net-metering still slow installs.
