Uttar Pradesh Launches 'School Chalo Abhiyan' to Drive Dropouts to Zero

The campaign banks on improved facilities with cash aid to pull every child into class.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched the School Chalo Abhiyan in Varanasi on Saturday, setting a goal of zero dropouts and citing a fall from 19% before 2017 to 3% per the state’s figures.
  • He asked principals to work with parents and told teachers to visit homes before school to find children who are not attending.
  • He said most Basic Education Council schools now have separate toilets for boys and girls along with drinking water, which he linked to better attendance.
  • He highlighted more than ₹80,000 crore in education spending and free supplies for each child, including uniforms, books and a ₹1,200 allowance, plus expansions of Kasturba Gandhi schools to Class 12 and Atal Residential Schools.
  • At the launch he served the mid-day meal, handed out textbooks and awards, and accused past governments of neglect and of “facilitating cheating.”
