UTMB Identifies Suspect in Assault on Campus Security Officer

The university released the man’s name, his vehicle and license-plate information and charged him with a third-degree felony while asking the public to help locate him.

Police asked for the public's help locating a suspect involved in an assault on a security guard at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston Sunday morning. 

Overview

  • A uniformed UTMB security officer intervened when an employee was approached near the 600 block of Market Street, and the suspect exited a vehicle and assaulted the officer before fleeing.
  • The security guard photographed the suspect and captured the vehicle’s Texas license plate as the suspect drove away, the release said.
  • UTMB Police named the suspect as Mark Anthony Johnson Jr. and identified the car as a 2010 Honda Accord with Texas plate VFP 5124.
  • Johnson is charged with assault on a security officer, classified as a third-degree felony under Texas law, and UTMB increased patrols in the area while actively searching for him.
  • Officials asked anyone with information to call the UTMB Police tip line at 409-772-2691 so the photo and plate evidence can be used to locate the suspect and reassure the campus community.
