Utilities Rush to Build Firm Power for AI Data Centers

Overview

• NextEra says it expects to finalize deals within about three months for two Japan-backed gas plants totaling nearly 10 gigawatts in Pennsylvania and Texas to supply data centers.
• Dominion reports nearly 51 gigawatts of contracted data-center capacity in Virginia and beat first-quarter profit forecasts on stronger power demand.
• Entergy raised its four-year spending plan to $57 billion to add grid and generation capacity, including seven new gas plants totaling more than 5.2 gigawatts for Meta data centers.
• Southern said data centers used 42% more power across its utilities than a year earlier and now counts 28 large-load projects totaling 11 gigawatts under contract.
