Ute Rampage Through Inner Melbourne Damages About 10 Vehicles as Police Charge 49-Year-Old

The case now proceeds to Melbourne Magistrates' Court following multiple dangerous driving charges.

Overview

  • Videos captured a grey Ford Ranger around 7pm driving on damaged rims along Church Street tram tracks and into oncoming traffic through Richmond, Collingwood and Fitzroy.
  • About 10 vehicles were damaged, with the run ending on York Street where the driver allegedly fled before being arrested after a short foot pursuit.
  • Police charged a 49-year-old Oakleigh man with dangerous driving while pursued, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, criminal damage and drug driving, and he was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
  • Officers said they seized a quantity of drugs from the ute, and alleged the driver returned a positive oral fluid test.
  • Police initially reported no injuries, though one report said a 57-year-old pedestrian was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a fall, and investigators are seeking dashcam or CCTV footage.
