Utah Reports First Year-Over-Year Drop in Homelessness Since 2019

Officials credit new funding alongside a shift toward treatment-focused, accountability-based programs.

Overview

  • Utah leaders said Tuesday that the 2026 Point-in-Time single-night census counted 4,512 people experiencing homelessness, down 1.6% from 2025.
  • Chronic homelessness fell 6.7% to 1,151 people, and the number sleeping outside dropped 9.7% to 945, according to state data.
  • The unsheltered decline came even as 'Code Blue' cold-weather nights that expand shelter capacity fell from 120 last year to 68 this year.
  • State leaders pointed to about $45.6 million approved this year and new efforts like Project Connect and Project Bridge that steer frequent arrestees into treatment and set aside targeted beds.
  • Despite progress, the total remains the second-highest in a decade, older-adult homelessness rose 8% to 385, and a proposed 1,300-bed campus is on hold over grant and site questions.
