USS Nimitz Will Serve as Centerpiece of International Naval Review 250 in New York

The carrier’s participation spotlights international naval partnerships and follows Navy decisions to keep the ship active because of delays to the Gerald R. Ford–class program.

Overview

  • The U.S. Navy announced on June 25, 2026 that USS Nimitz (CVN 68) will take a leading role in the International Naval Review 250 in New York Harbor from July 3–8, 2026.
  • During the week‑long event the carrier will anchor after the July 4 Parade of Sail, host distinguished visitors, and run public and community relations activities with its crew.
  • Nimitz joins a large international lineup that includes U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships plus participants from more than 50 allied and partner nations converging on New York for the 250th anniversary celebration.
  • The ship recently shifted homeport toward Naval Station Norfolk and completed a goodwill tour around South America, demonstrating the Navy’s use of Nimitz for both public diplomacy and operational tasks.
  • The Navy kept Nimitz active instead of retiring it this spring to meet a congressional requirement to maintain at least 11 nuclear carriers while Gerald R. Ford–class construction and schedule problems persist, a choice that affects fleet planning and carrier availability.
