USS Massachusetts Commissioned in Boston as Navy's Newest Attack Sub

The Navy marked the addition of its 25th Virginia-class attack submarine with a Boston ceremony steeped in maritime tradition.

Overview

  • The submarine, which was commissioned Saturday at Boston's Conley Terminal, becomes the Navy's newest Virginia-class fast-attack boat.
  • It is the 25th Virginia-class delivered to the fleet and the fifth U.S. Navy vessel to carry the Massachusetts name.
  • The 377-foot, nuclear-powered sub can dive below 800 feet and carry torpedoes plus up to 24 Tomahawk cruise missiles for strikes.
  • The crew numbers 147, including 39 women, reflecting newer submarines designed from the start for mixed-gender teams.
  • After a ceremony marked by USS Constitution getting underway with a planned 17-gun salute, the sub is expected to shift next to its home port in Groton, Connecticut.
