USPS Issues 'Lowriders Forever' Stamps Honoring Chicano Automotive Art

The national release signals formal recognition of a culture once targeted by cruising bans.

Overview

  • USPS debuted the Lowriders Forever stamps on March 13 at a first-day ceremony at San Diego’s Logan Heights Library, followed by a San Francisco unveiling with a car show.
  • The pane showcases five vehicles with their celebrated identities: a 1946 Chevrolet Fleetline, the 1958 Impala “Eight Figures,” the 1963 Impala “El Rey,” the 1964 Impala “The Golden Rose,” and the 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme “Pocket Change.”
  • The stamps are 78-cent Forever issues sold in panes of 15 for about $11.70 at post offices and the USPS Postal Store, with a 120-day window for first-day postmark requests and collector options such as First Day Covers and Digital Color Postmarks.
  • Each stamp is one-third wider than a typical commemorative to reveal hydraulics and paint details, with art direction by Antonio Alcalá, photography by Humberto “Beto” Mendoza and Philip Gordon, and pinstriping by Danny Alvarado.
  • Community leaders frame the issue as validation after years of policing and local cruising bans, including a San Francisco case that led to policy changes and a recent California law ending municipal anti-cruising rules.
