USAF C-130 Damaged in Shannon Airport Breach

Police are investigating how an intruder reached the airfield to strike a parked military plane.

Overview

  • The parked transport plane, a U.S. Air Force C-130, was attacked Saturday at Shannon Airport after a man climbed onto the wing and hit the airframe with a hand tool, as seen in widely shared video.
  • Airport police, fire crews, Gardaí, and on‑site Defence Forces responded and used mobile stairs to reach the suspect, who was arrested shortly before 11 a.m. and is detained under Section 4 on suspicion of criminal damage.
  • U.S. Air Forces in Europe said the aircraft from the 139th Airlift Wing was damaged and no personnel were injured, and the plane is expected to stay out of service pending detailed inspection and repair.
  • Airport operations paused from 9:50 to 10:15 a.m., causing minor delays to two departures and a short hold for one arrival, and flights have since run as normal.
  • Authorities are examining where the perimeter was breached at an airport long used by U.S. military flights, which has had prior access incidents and recurring protests that have heightened scrutiny of security.
