Overview
- The couple, both U.S. nationals, set out around 7:30 p.m. Saturday from Hope Town to Elbow Cay in an 8-foot hard-bottom dinghy, police said.
- During the trip the woman fell overboard with the boat’s keys, the engine shut off, and strong currents carried her out to sea as her husband lost sight of her.
- He paddled the disabled dinghy for hours to Marsh Harbour Boat Yard, arriving about 4 a.m. Sunday, and a person he told then alerted police.
- The Royal Bahamas Police Force opened an investigation as the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and Hope Town Fire & Rescue searched the area and asked the public for tips.
- The U.S. State Department lists the Bahamas at Level 2 and warns that boating is not well regulated and that injuries and deaths have occurred.
