U.S. Woman Missing After Falling From Dinghy off Bahamas, Police Say

The search led by Abaco authorities underscores warnings about poorly regulated boating in the Bahamas.

Overview

  • The couple, both U.S. nationals, set out around 7:30 p.m. Saturday from Hope Town to Elbow Cay in an 8-foot hard-bottom dinghy, police said.
  • During the trip the woman fell overboard with the boat’s keys, the engine shut off, and strong currents carried her out to sea as her husband lost sight of her.
  • He paddled the disabled dinghy for hours to Marsh Harbour Boat Yard, arriving about 4 a.m. Sunday, and a person he told then alerted police.
  • The Royal Bahamas Police Force opened an investigation as the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and Hope Town Fire & Rescue searched the area and asked the public for tips.
  • The U.S. State Department lists the Bahamas at Level 2 and warns that boating is not well regulated and that injuries and deaths have occurred.
