U.S. Sympathies Lean Toward Palestinians Over Israelis for First Time, Gallup Finds

Gallup points to a sharp turn among independents, with the 41%–36% split within the survey’s margin of error.

Overview

  • Gallup’s probability-based poll of 1,001 U.S. adults conducted Feb. 2–16 found 41% sympathize more with Palestinians and 36% with Israelis, within a ±4-point margin of error.
  • Independents flipped from favoring Israelis last year to backing Palestinians 41%–30% this year, driving the overall change.
  • Partisan gaps persist, with about 70% of Republicans more sympathetic to Israelis and roughly 65% of Democrats more sympathetic to Palestinians.
  • Generational patterns show younger and, for the first time, many middle-aged adults leaning more toward Palestinians, while older Americans remain more sympathetic to Israel though by a narrowing margin.
  • Americans still view Israel more favorably overall than the Palestinian Territories, and about 57% support a two-state solution, as the shift in sympathies accelerated during the Gaza war after beginning prior to Oct. 7, 2023.
