U.S. Says Israel and Lebanon Extend Cease-Fire 45 Days

The extension buys time for U.S.-led military and political talks under a fragile truce.

Overview

  • The State Department announced Friday the truce will run 45 more days, with military talks at the Pentagon on May 29 and political talks on June 2–3.
  • Israeli strikes in Lebanon have continued during the cease-fire, with the Health Ministry reporting 22 people killed Wednesday after attacks on southern towns and on vehicles near Beirut.
  • The Israeli military said it killed more than 220 Hezbollah fighters over the past week and hit more than 440 targets in southern Lebanon.
  • Hezbollah leaders rejected disarmament and slammed the Washington talks, and the group claimed new drone attacks including one near Rosh Hanikra that Israel said wounded civilians.
  • Humanitarian groups warned of rising civilian harm, with UNICEF counting at least 200 children killed since March and reports of medics slain and schools and clinics damaged in the south.
