U.S. Pledges Up to $100 Million for Chernobyl Dome Repairs

The pledge seeks to jump-start G7 funding for costly repairs to Chernobyl's damaged containment arch.

Overview

  • The State Department, which announced the move Wednesday, said the United States is ready to provide up to $100 million to fix the New Safe Confinement at Chernobyl.
  • France, leading the G7, put the repair bill at €500 million in March, and the U.S. urged G7 and European partners to make substantial contributions to share the cost.
  • The arch covering Reactor 4 was struck by a Russian drone in February 2025, puncturing the outer radiation shell and, according to the U.S. statement, leaving it short of proper protection.
  • The administration framed the funding as part of U.S. leadership on nuclear safety and said it will work with Congress, while its statement described the damage as occurring during the war without directly naming Russia.
  • The metal shelter, completed in 2016 with €2.1 billion in international support, was built to prevent future leaks from the ruined reactor.
