U.S. Opens Safety Probe Into 2.9 Million Teslas Over Full Self-Driving Violations

Regulators will assess whether Tesla’s driver-assist gives drivers adequate warning to intervene.

Overview

  • NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation began a preliminary evaluation covering roughly 2.88–2.9 million vehicles equipped with FSD (Supervised) or FSD (Beta).
  • The agency has 58 reports tied to FSD behavior, including more than a dozen crashes, 23 injuries and some fires, with no fatalities cited in this review.
  • Six incidents involved Teslas entering intersections against red lights and crashing, four with reported injuries, with multiple cases at a Joppa, Maryland intersection that Tesla says it has addressed.
  • Complaints describe the software running red lights, attempting lane changes into opposing traffic and proceeding straight from turn-only lanes as drivers reported little notice to take over.
  • Investigators will evaluate detection of signals and lane markings, driver warnings and performance at railroad crossings, and could seek a software recall if an unreasonable safety risk is found.
