U.S. Navy Commissions USS Massachusetts, a Virginia-Class Attack Submarine, in Boston Harbor

The new fast-attack boat strengthens U.S. undersea deterrence.

  • USS Massachusetts, commissioned Saturday in Boston Harbor, becomes the Navy’s 25th Virginia-class fast-attack submarine.
  • Built by General Dynamics Electric Boat with HII–Newport News Shipbuilding, the Block IV boat cost more than $2.8 billion.
  • The 377-foot submarine displaces about 7,800 tons and uses a nuclear reactor designed to last its entire service life without refueling.
  • It carries Tomahawk cruise missiles and torpedoes and is built for anti-ship, anti-submarine, surveillance, and special operations missions.
  • The crew numbers 147, including 39 women, and the submarine is expected to homeport in Groton, Connecticut.
