U.S. Naval Blockade of Iranian Ports Stays in Place as Strikes Continue

The continued blockade and strikes keep U.S. naval forces at high operational tempo, casting doubt over rotation and sustainment plans.

Overview

  • NAVCENT notified that the blockade of Iranian ports remains active pending a ceasefire signing in Geneva, and CENTCOM says it launched strike waves after a U.S. Army Apache was shot down and disabled two more commercial vessels last week, bringing the total disabled to nine.
  • Two carrier strike groups led by USS Abraham Lincoln and USS George H.W. Bush remain on station with multiple fighter and electronic-attack squadrons conducting self-defense strikes and blockade patrols.
  • The Lincoln Carrier Strike Group has been deployed for nearly seven months and is identified as a likely early rotation candidate, but the memorandum of understanding that would govern any drawdown does not yet define timing or scope.
  • More than 20 U.S. Navy surface combatants operate in the CENTCOM area and forward amphibious forces include USS Tripoli in the CENTCOM theater and USS Boxer in the Indo-Pacific, while USS George Washington made a scheduled port visit to Guam for replenishment and crew rest.
  • Sustained operations, Ford-class availability problems, and backlogged maintenance are straining fleet rotations and crew endurance, which could delay relief schedules and complicate the Navy’s ability to reduce forces quickly if the ceasefire prompts a drawdown.
