Overview
- The United States announced on Thursday that it will extend visa-denial sanctions that prevent Palestinian Authority President Mahmud Abás and many senior OLP and PA officials from traveling to New York for the UN General Assembly.
- The UN General Assembly voted to let the Palestinian delegation take part by videoconference after the U.S. visa restrictions, passing the measure with 152 votes in favor, three votes against and four abstentions.
- Washington kept a narrow exemption that allows notified staff of the OLP Mission to the UN to enter, which preserves a reduced in-person Palestinian presence in New York.
- At the same time the U.S. authorized a smaller, restricted Iranian delegation to attend the High-Level Week, a decision that several UN members and officials have criticized as inconsistent treatment.
