Overview

  • The Genesis Mission was launched by executive order on November 24–25, 2025 and sets a ten-year goal to double U.S. research and development productivity.
  • The federal government has committed more than $5 billion to the Department of Energy program as a multi-year funding pipeline to build shared AI-enabled research infrastructure.
  • Microsoft announced a $60 million commitment to the initiative on July 22, 2026 to support the DOE’s planned AI discovery platform linking 17 national laboratories and their supercomputers.
  • Scale AI formalized a role with a Memorandum of Understanding around May 19, 2026 and major tech firms such as NVIDIA, Google, IBM, AWS, Oracle, Microsoft, OpenAI, and AMD are reported to be collaborating with the labs.
  • The mission will focus on fusion, advanced nuclear systems, quantum algorithms, materials discovery, and grid modernization, raising practical hopes for faster experiments and commercial benefits and prompting attention to downstream risks such as effects on existing cryptography if quantum advances accelerate.
