U.S. and Mexican Lawmakers Revive Talks, Move to Formalize Interparliamentary Channel

Mexican leaders will seek to formalize regular interparliamentary sessions through the Foreign Ministry.

Overview

  • Ricardo Monreal said the chamber meeting was informal and pledged to ask the Foreign Ministry to set up a formal interparliamentary commission to sustain regular exchanges.
  • The visiting U.S. lawmakers also met Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente, with the U.S. ambassador highlighting sustained congressional engagement, recent joint security results and a new critical minerals action plan.
  • Lawmakers on both sides emphasized the T-MEC’s role in investment and supply-chain stability, citing nearshoring and cooperation in strategic sectors such as infrastructure, energy and critical minerals.
  • Participants described a cordial, constructive tone with no formal complaints, while addressing cooperation against fentanyl, illicit arms trafficking, organized crime and concerns linked to migration enforcement practices.
