U.S. and Israel Intensify Strikes on Iran as CENTCOM Says Operation Is Ahead of Plan

CENTCOM says the campaign has badly degraded Iran’s air defenses and navy.

Overview

  • Israel launched a new broad wave of strikes on Iranian launch sites, air defenses and infrastructure in and around Tehran, with reported hits in Qom, as satellite images showed damage to government and military facilities.
  • U.S. Central Command said Operation Epic Fury has struck nearly 2,000 targets with more than 50,000 U.S. troops engaged, destroying 17 Iranian naval vessels and leaving no Iranian ships underway in key waterways.
  • Iran continued large missile and drone barrages at U.S. bases and regional targets, with the U.S. confirming six service member deaths and ordering closures or drawdowns at several diplomatic posts.
  • Human-rights and Iranian sources reported civilian deaths in Iran ranging from the high hundreds to more than 1,000, including many children, while Israeli-Hezbollah exchanges in Lebanon killed dozens and prompted evacuations.
  • Iranian officials are meeting to select a successor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as Israel’s foreign minister warned any new supreme leader would be targeted, and more than 20,000 flights were canceled as Strait of Hormuz constraints drove energy price spikes.
