UPI Caps 2025 With Record 21.6 Billion December Payments

New NPCI data highlight record usage against mounting concerns over outages, fraud, fees.

Overview

  • NPCI reports 21.63 billion UPI transactions in December worth INR 27.97 lakh crore, up about 29% in volume and 20% in value year on year.
  • Average daily activity in December reached roughly 698 million transactions with an average daily amount of INR 90,217 crore.
  • Calendar year 2025 totaled about 228 billion UPI payments valued near INR 300 lakh crore, rising from roughly 172 billion and INR 246.82 lakh crore in 2024.
  • Usage skewed toward smaller retail payments as average ticket size fell to roughly INR 1,262–1,293, person‑to‑merchant volumes outpaced person‑to‑person, and active UPI QRs reached about 709 million.
  • Resilience concerns grew after repeated outages and an official tally of over 13 lakh UPI‑linked fraud cases with losses exceeding INR 1,000 crore, as industry debates fees even as the government dismissed MDR speculation.
