UPEI Gains Ground as Maritimes Basketball Tips Off and Membertou Art Debuts at U18 Worlds

Momentum shifts put UPEI in the thick of the AUS races.

A poster specially designed for the 2026 IIHF U18 Women's World Hockey Championship in Cape Breton features a female hockey player skating on pond ice. Artist Kierra Marshall says her inspiration for the scene comes from a favourite local Membertou pond called Buster's Pond, where she says every child in the First Nation has gone to skate as they grew up.

Two artisans from both Membertou and Eskasoni were asked to handcraft 60 beaded pins to be gifted to the best players of the hockey games played at the 2026 IIHF U18 Women's World Hockey Championship being held in Cape Breton, Jan. 10-18. Andrea Dennis, a master beader from Membertou, said she is proud to have an opportunity to feature traditional Mi'kmaq crafting at such a significant event.

  • Standouts for the UPEI women include Grace Lancaster at 16.5 points per game, record-setting three-point shooter Devon Lawlor, and rookie Ingrid Khuong averaging 8.5 rebounds.
  • Charlottetown’s 41st Confederation City Classic runs Jan. 8–10 with 24 AAA teams, while in Cape Breton a Membertou-designed flag and poster by Kierra Marshall will feature at the IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship starting Saturday.
