Unwell Launches Summer Games on YouTube

The short-run reality series follows a $500 million WTSL investment, arriving during public scrutiny over the company’s culture, the planned shutdown of its beverage unit.

Overview

  • Unwell announced Monday that Unwell Summer Games will premiere Sept. 7 on YouTube, featuring 16 reality stars and creators who competed over four days at a ranch in Canada for a $250,000 cash prize.
  • The series lists Alex Cooper, Eric Detwiler, Matt Kaplan and Mina Lefevre as executive producers, with Adam W. hosting and commentary from Cameron Gerrard and Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu.
  • Unwell is positioning the show as part of a push into original video formats on YouTube after its winter edition drew reported peaks of roughly 1.4 million to 1.8 million views and the company secured a WTSL-led investment valuing it at $500 million.
  • Recent reporting from Bloomberg and Vanity Fair has highlighted internal unease, staff turnover and allegations that co-CEO Matt Kaplan yelled at and berated employees, and Bloomberg says Unwell Beverage Co will shut down later this year.
  • The rollout tests a fast, creator-driven reality format that could help Unwell expand into live events and TV if audience numbers remain strong, but reported leadership issues and the beverage shutdown raise risks for talent relations, advertisers and future deals.
