Unvaccinated Measles Patient Traveled by Amtrak Through Six California Counties

Health officials have posted timed exposure alerts to find contacts and urge rapid MMR vaccination or immune globulin to limit further spread.

  • An unvaccinated traveler later hospitalized with confirmed measles rode Amtrak trains and Thruway buses through Alameda, Butte, Kern, Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Joaquin counties before continuing to Colorado.
  • The traveler visited Denver Union Station on Tuesday, Sept. 15, between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. and stayed at a Steamboat Springs hotel on Wednesday, Sept. 16, creating timed exposure windows publicized by state health agencies.
  • California and Colorado health departments are working with county partners and the CDC to notify passengers and station visitors from the listed trains, buses and stops and to conduct contact tracing.
  • Officials advise people who were at listed locations to check MMR immunity, seek the MMR vaccine within 72 hours of exposure or immune globulin within six days when eligible, and monitor for symptoms for up to 21 days.
