Overview
- Heavy thunderstorms and gusty winds on the night of May 26–27 drenched paddy and maize at multiple procurement centres across Telangana, forcing farmers to try to cover and salvage stacks as rain swept through yards.
- Officials reported that about 9,214 tonnes of paddy were reported wet from 17 districts and that an overnight salvage operation shifted roughly 95% of the soaked stock to rice mills to avert major loss.
- Telangana says seasonal arrivals are about 66.75 lakh metric tonnes with nearly 57 LMT procured and that ₹10,096 crore in MSP payments has been released to more than 8.14 lakh farmers.
- Opposition parties and many farmers blame delays, shortages of sacks, labour and transport for exposing harvests and are demanding immediate procurement of wet grain at MSP, compensation and accountability from the state.
- The IMD has issued orange warnings for more storms and officials warn that remaining procurement and protection work is urgent because shortages of vehicles and labour and the approaching monsoon and Bakrid holiday could slow operations.
