Unoffial PC Port Brings Gears of War 2 Campaign to Windows

The community-made release reportedly uses a leaked 2008 build, which leaves its legal status and continued availability uncertain.

Overview

  • A fan developer named xHeliosx published Gears of War 2: Hollow on ModDB and the installer drew thousands of downloads and heavy Discord traffic after its release on Thursday, July 16, 2026.
  • The port provides a native Windows build of the full single-player campaign, includes the Road to Ruin chapter, and saves progress at the end of each chapter.
  • Hollow adds modern PC features such as mouse-and-keyboard controls, an adjustable field-of-view slider, uncapped frame rates, support for higher resolutions, and options for shadows, anti-aliasing, ambient occlusion and other graphics toggles.
  • The project is reportedly based on an early leaked 2008 build that included Windows binaries and was adapted to work with the final Xbox 360 assets; the creator and early players have since reported texture, checkpoint and performance problems.
  • Because the port is unauthorized and neither Microsoft nor developer The Coalition has endorsed it, its availability is uncertain and users should expect possible takedowns or legal risk and exercise caution when installing unofficial files.
