University of North Texas Cancels Victor 'Marka27' Quiñonez Exhibition After Installation

The show featured work critical of ICE and had already been fully installed.

Overview

  • On February 11, CVAD Galleries director Stefanie Dlugosz-Acton emailed the artist and Boston University to terminate the loan and arrange the works’ return.
  • The gallery’s listing was removed and its windows were papered over, and students alerted Victor Quiñonez before he received the formal notice.
  • The traveling exhibition, curated by Kate Fowle after its Boston University run, included the Frieze Impact Award–recognized I.C.E. Scream series critiquing immigration enforcement.
  • UNT has provided no public explanation for the cancellation and did not respond to requests for comment.
  • Students circulated protest plans, and Boston University and the artist are seeking an alternate Texas venue; the university previously took down a pro-Palestinian artwork after complaints.
