University of Essex to Close Southend Campus in 2026, Cut 400 Jobs

The university cites a 52% fall in Southend’s international enrolments as the reason for consolidating on its Colchester site.

Overview

  • The university has opened formal consultations with staff and students following Tuesday’s decision.
  • Around 800 Southend students are expected to move to Colchester from September 2026, with teaching in Southend continuing until the summer closure.
  • The plan removes about 400 roles, including 200 academic posts this year and roughly 200 professional services jobs over the following two years.
  • Leaders attribute the consolidation to a 52% fall in international enrolments at Southend since 2021–22 and to a budget shortfall of about £29 million.
  • Vice-Chancellor Frances Bowen called the steps necessary to secure long-term sustainability, as Colchester MP Pam Cox voiced concern and pledged to work with partners.
