Overview
- United announced on Tuesday that it will add 10 new international destinations for summer 2027 and several other international routes, calling the package the largest international expansion in the airline’s history.
- Eight of the 10 new cities will operate from Newark, with other new flights from San Francisco and Washington Dulles, and the additions include Okinawa, Toulouse, Luxembourg, Marseille, Ibiza, Valencia, Terceira, Ljubljana, Olbia and Catania.
- United plans to begin international service with the Airbus A321XLR on Dec. 1, 2026 and will use the XLR in 2027 on several European routes, including Newark–Luxembourg and Dulles–Toulouse, to serve thinner long‑haul markets more cheaply than widebodies.
- The airline published specific launch dates and aircraft types for many routes — for example, San Francisco–Okinawa starts March 27, 2027 on a Boeing 777‑200ER and Newark–Luxembourg starts April 2, 2027 on the A321XLR — and said most services will be seasonal into autumn.
- United acknowledged a few "teething issues" with A321XLR deliveries but said it expects enough jets to operate the planned schedule and affirmed that existing international routes will be restored rather than cut as the network grows.
