United 787 Diverts to Boston After Cockpit Windshield Cracks

An FAA probe could determine whether the windshield damage reflects an isolated failure or a broader safety issue.

Overview

  • United Flight 108, which left Washington Dulles with about 175 passengers, diverted to Boston Logan less than two hours into its transatlantic leg on Monday, Aug. 10 and landed safely.
  • Massport Fire and Rescue responded on arrival and officials reported no injuries as the crew executed a precautionary diversion and emergency landing.
  • United said the outer layer of the plane’s multilayer cockpit windshield was damaged and emphasized that windshields are built in layers so one damaged layer does not immediately compromise flight safety.
  • The Federal Aviation Administration has opened an investigation, the aircraft remains grounded in Boston for inspection, and investigators have not yet identified a cause.
  • The canceled Munich flight left passengers rebooked and provided hotels, meal vouchers and compensation, and the incident will be reviewed alongside separate, unrelated windshield cases from 2025–2026 to check for any broader patterns.
