Overview
- The Unicode Consortium formally approved nine new emoji that expand the standard set used across devices, including Monarch Butterfly, Meteor, Lighthouse, Net with Handle, Eraser, Leftwards and Rightwards Thumb signs, a Cracked Smiling Face, and a whole Pickle.
- Unicode designer Jennifer Daniel provided intended meanings for several glyphs, saying the Monarch Butterfly carries generational and ancestral resonance and the Meteor will host 'ball of fire' designs distinct from the Comet emoji.
- The existing chopped-pickle/cucumber emoji will remain in the standard set while the new whole-pickle glyph is added, giving users two separate symbols for different meanings.
- Platform vendors will create their own stylistic artwork for these code points and make them available on phones, tablets, and computers; Apple is reported to be likely to ship its versions in iOS 27.3 or 27.4 in 2027, though that timing is not yet confirmed by the company.
- Because Unicode controls code points but not vendor art or schedules, the rollout will be staggered across ecosystems and could change how people express subtle emotions or ideas online as new expressive and literal icons enter everyday messaging.
