UNESCO Adds 'Teatros da Amazônia' to World Heritage List

Overview

• The UNESCO World Heritage Committee approved the joint candidacy on Monday, July 27, 2026, formally inscribing the Teatro Amazonas (Manaus) and the Theatro da Paz (Belém) as a single site called “Teatros da Amazônia.”
• The nomination was prepared by Brazil’s Iphan with the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and supported by the Amazonas and Pará state culture secretariats.
• Icomos judged the theatres to be in good conservation condition but warned of specific threats, including uncontrolled urban development near the buildings, rising visitor pressure, climate-driven changes in rainfall and sunlight, and the spread of wood‑eating organisms.
• Federal and state officials have committed to creating a management committee and to carry out monitoring, impact assessments and targeted conservation works to meet UNESCO obligations and guide cultural tourism growth.
• Built during the late‑19th‑century rubber boom, the two theatres blend European design and Amazonian materials and their inscription is the first cultural World Heritage listing in Brazil’s North, raising the region’s cultural profile while increasing responsibility for local communities and heritage workers.
