UNESCO Adds Iztapalapa’s Passion Play to Intangible Cultural Heritage List

The decision activates a safeguarding plan committing Mexican authorities to protect the barrio-led tradition under COSSIAC’s recognized leadership.

Overview

  • The Intergovernmental Committee inscribed the tradition on December 10, 2025 during its 20th session in New Delhi, India.
  • Rooted in a 1833 communal vow and staged formally since 1843, the event is led by Iztapalapa’s eight original barrios and drew more than 1.4 million attendees in 2024.
  • UNESCO cited respect for free, prior and informed consent and noted the practice’s contributions to social cohesion, cultural rights and peace, praising the nomination’s audiovisual evidence.
  • Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum, culture secretary Claudia Curiel de Icaza, Mexico City leader Clara Brugada and local organizers publicly welcomed the inscription.
  • The approved plan includes reinforcing historical archives and formalizes state obligations to safeguard the celebration, adding it to Mexico’s portfolio alongside Day of the Dead, mariachi, traditional cuisine and the bolero.
