UNAM’s Fiesta del Libro y la Rosa Expands for 18th Edition With Culture-of-Peace Focus

Organizers present a culture-of-peace program that responds to recent campus violence through public conversation and literary work.

Overview

  • The festival, which runs April 23–26, will stage more than 500 activities at the Centro Cultural Universitario and at new city venues such as the Museo Universitario del Chopo and the Colegio de San Ildefonso.
  • This year’s theme centers on a “culture of peace” under the motto “Nombrar para existir,” opening with the talk “Un nombre para mí: desapariciones y literatura.”
  • Organizers detailed the scale as 183 stands and 133 exhibitors spread over about 11,000 square meters, keeping roughly the same budget as last year at about 4 million pesos despite adding a fourth day.
  • Program highlights include a centenary tribute to historian Miguel León-Portilla featuring archaeologist Eduardo Matos Moctezuma and historian Javier Garciadiego.
  • UNAM leaders linked the focus to recent student violence and post-pandemic pressures on youth, describing interdepartmental, non-punitive support efforts and giving students active roles as moderators and participants.
