- The Consejo Universitario designated Germán Enrique Fajardo Dolci, Guillermo Moisés Hurtado Pérez and Margarita Teresa de Jesús García Gasca to the Junta de Gobierno on Friday, June 19, completing the first round of appointments under the reformed rules.
- The change follows a March amendment to article 13 that established public convocatorias, required academic-area councils to interview applicants and submit mandatory ternas for the Consejo Universitario to vote on.
- The Secretaría General screened applicants and sent candidate lists to the Councils of Academic Area, which held interviews and produced the ternas presented to the full Consejo Universitario.
- The new appointees bring medical, humanities and university administration experience and will take part in key decisions including future rector and faculty director appointments, which could shift UNAM governance dynamics.
- The reform ends an 81-year practice of closed-circle nominations created in 1945 to protect institutional autonomy and the first implementation drew praise for opening the process along with criticism for procedural gaps such as late or incomplete candidate documentation and limited interaction during interviews.
